Flashed Spansion P chip well, but PS3 would not reboot

Postby ed1973 on Mon Oct 24, 2011 5:13 pm

Hello,

I following this guide to downgrade my ps3 slim from 3.70 to 3.55:

http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/08/noob-tuto ... kmeaw-cfw/

Setup:

- PS3 slim model CECH-2504A (160GB)
- Motherboard type JTP-001 (with NOR chip)
- Spansion S29GL128P90TFIRZ NOR chip
- Installed Progskeet Special Edition (removed R8 and put switch over R7) according to JSD-001 diagram with short wires (less than 10cm)
- Grounded 2 times (with very short and thicker wires (less than 2cm)
- Dumping/flashing with Winskeet40000_111004 software
- Installed Progskeet drivers_110812 on Windows XP

What I did:

1) Turned on PS3. I needed to turn the PS3 on with R7 bridged. Otherwise the PS3 would not turn on. So I did not need to following the guide with,
disconnecting R7, turn on ps3, wait 25 sec, bridge R7.
2) Connect Progskeet with USB to PC
3) Started Winskeet software, selected Spansion S29GL128P90TFIRZ chip, settings were correct 128KB x 128 = 16MB
4) Dumped 3x times and checked with CRC checker, and the files were the same.
5) Started transplante.exe , put the dump in donador, and downgrade.bin in recepter and clicked go!
6) Started Flow rebuilder and selected "Byte reverse and extract NOR dump file" and put downgrade.bin in input file and clicked Execute Operation.
downgrade.bin.REV was created
7) Started Winskeet , select my Spansion P chip, and wrote the downgrade.bin.REV back the the PS3.

The manual says: If you flashed your PS3 correctly, your PS3 will reboot and show this message: “Push PS button”

However this never happened, the PS3 still stayed on and I could go through the menu with the controller.
When I turned the PS3 off by holding the power button, turned it back on, the PS3 would not boot.
When I used Winskeet to write the original dump back to the PS3, the PS3 could be recovered and the PS3 would start normally. Strange was that I did not need to byte reverse my dump, I could just write it back.

So my conclusion is:

- reading the NOR chip goes fine
- writing to the NOR chip goes fine

The problem should be related to the transplante.exe or Flow rebuilder software.
What I did was the following 4 tests:

1) Dumped NOR chip
2) Byte reversed dump
3) Did transplante action
4) Bytes reversed chip
5) Wrote back to the NOR chip
6) Dumped NOR chip to check

1) Dumped NOR chip
2) Did transplante action
3) Bytes reversed chip
4) Wrote back to the NOR chip
5) Dumped NOR chip to check

1) Dumped NOR chip
2) Byte reversed dump
3) Did transplante action
4) Wrote back to the NOR chip
5) Dumped NOR chip to check

1) Dumped NOR chip
2) Did transplante action
3) Wrote back to the NOR chip
4) Dumped NOR chip to check

This did not give the desired results, the PS3 would not reboot.

Then I started to investigate what transplante.exe was exactly doing and decided to do all actions manually with HXD hex editor.
I started to check which parts should be copied to the downgrade.bin and also that did not work out.
It was a little bit different then transplante was doing, things like starting at different addresses (810 or 820), but transplante.exe was copying a little more bytes, but that should not be the problem, I think.

I have checked and performed all the things above, do you have some advise what to do next ?
Your help would be appreciated very much, thanks in advance.

Hi. You do not need to use transplante.exe or Flow rebuilder!
You must:
1. download the dump (In Winnskeet choose Spansion P presets)
2. In windskeet choose "Patch" and specify the location of patches downgrade v2 and where to put the source file
3. Write the resulting file back.

Thanks a lot, this would help me a lot.

Where can I get the desperado v2 patch ? Or did you mean downgrade v2 ?

I did find the downgrade v2 patch with the description:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ProgSkeet Patcher's PS3 NOR Downgrade v2 patchfile
by
AnGeL
WwW.DiGiTaLAnGeL.iT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
==========================================================================
============================= HOW TO USE IT ==============================
-Just extract the folder "downgrade v2 ProgSkeet" anywhere on your PC.
-Open WinSkeet40000/LinuxKeet/iSkeet on your computer.
-Create a dump of your 3.70 OFW if you haven't already done it.
-Call it "OFW370.bin" -IT MUST BE A BYTESWAPPED DUMP!-
-Open the "Patcher" tab and select "OFW370.bin" as the input file.
-Select the progskeet_patch.txt as the patch file.
-Go for it :) Now you have a fully working downgrade.bin to flash !
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
This release is based on the patchset of the downgrade v2 released by
dospiedra, and you should check BYTESWAP while reading NOR and when you
flash your downgrade.bin file back!

Thanks a lot, on wednesday I will go on and post the results.

The PS3 will still not reboot, whatever I try.

I first created a starting point, so whenever I flash the PS3 with modified firmware, I recovered the PS3 with the original firmware.

I restored it with the following way:

1) Turned on the PS3
2) Started Winskeet, selected Spansion P, clicked flash, selected original firmware and flashed
3) Turned off ps3 by holding power button for 30 seconds, and turned it on and saw that the ps3 started.

After that used 2 dumps:

1) The original dump, dumped with winskeet, hex editor showed METLDR at 820.
2) The byte reversed dump, created with Flow Rebuilder, hex editor showed EMLTRD at 820.

I did the following :

1) Started Winskeet, selected Spansion P chip.
2) At patch tab, selected input dump, progskeet_patch.txt as patch file, and created new firmware files.
3) Flashed the NOR chip with the files.

However, the PS3 did not reboot. When I did reboot it myself manually, it did not give the screen where you were asked to push the PS button.

What did I do wrong ????

What happened is that I left my PS3 alone for a couple of hours, and that when I returned I saw the message on the screen :

“Push PS button” in dutch with other text.

I took different USB sticks, formatted them as FAT32, and put the :

- LV2Diag [Download Here or Mirror]
- Kmeaw CFW PUP File (3.55)

in the root. Turned off the ps3, disconnected power, reconnected power, inserted USB stick in the right slot (not the left), and turned on the PS3 and nothing happened. Strange, strange, strange.

I know that there is some odd going on with my Progskeet chip, because with original 3.70 on the ps3:

1) With the switch disconnected, the ps3 would not turn on
2) With the switch connected, only in that situation the PS3 would boot, and show the menu on the screen.

I would like to remove the Progskeet after the installation, would it be better to desolder the Progskeet, and continue with the USB stick with the 2 files ?

I removed the Progskeet chip.

At step 5 of:
http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/08/noob-tuto ... kmeaw-cfw/

I see:

- Insert to right most USB port on PS3
- Now turn on your PS3 and leave it alone, the PS3 should turn off by itself in 10-15mins.

Is it normal that when you turn on the ps3 with the USB stick, that you just see the same on the screen, namely:

“Push PS button” with other text ?

I never did that. I never pushed the PS button when asked.

All goes well as it should. Now you must enter the console in service mode using the Jailbreak dongle.
